Building Upon: Exchange of Ideas, Culture, Experience

Blue Hen Pottery presents an opportunity to meet Ceramic artists from Tallinn, Estonia; Pepin, WI and Greenville NC at North Carolina Pottery Center.

What do they all have in common? They are threaded together by the history of exchange that emerges from working with common material, clay. 

Many years ago, Richard Spiller, a former professor of East Carolina University ventured out into the unknown of the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), Saint Petersburg and Finland. What he found there and how the history unfolded, will be unravelled in his slide presentation.

Some of the friends he made while in Estonia: Urmas Puhkan, The Head of the Ceramics Department and Ingrid Allik, a Professors of Ceramics at the Estonian Academy of Art will sneak us a peek into the academic art education in Estonia and introduce us to their individual work.

The youngest generation of the growing international clay family, the Students of East Carolina University and Estonian Academy of Art will be sharing with us their freshest ideas.

Please welcome these artists to the Seagrove community and join us for this exciting event - a Pot Luck Presentation Night at NCPC Educational Building.

Seagrove, NC.......Working together for the good of the community.... Seagrove potters are again coming together to create an eventful weekend with something for everyone. Over 50 clay artists will be offering special events and kiln openings throughout Seagrove the weekend of April 16-17, 2011. Spring has always been a time for renewal and awakening in Seagrove and this year an unprecedented number of shops are opening their doors together to Celebrate spring with special events. It’s a great weekend to come out and leisurely browse, shop and experience a 200-year-old tradition, see the process, develop and renew relationships with the potters of Seagrove.

A large variety of events are scheduled throughout the weekend including but not limited to loads of beautiful new pots fresh from the kilns, door prizes, refreshments, turning demonstrations and raku firing. Stop at any participating shop as you come into Seagrove to pick up a map of the tour and details of events.

The Seagrove Area Potters Association (SAPA) is a group of remarkable clay artists united to showcase the traditional and contemporary pottery of the historic Seagrove community. The goal is to maintain the authenticity of Seagrove pottery by working together in community efforts to promote the historical, educational and artistic aspects that can be experienced when visiting Seagrove, and to draw customers to the shops to have a firsthand Seagrove experience. The Celebration of Seagrove Potters was formed in 2008 and merged that year with the SAPA, a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to promote, publicize and market the Seagrove Area Pottery Community and its tradition.

Museum opens at 7:00am with refreshments. Come early, get a number so that you don't have to stand in line, and enjoy a hot drink and a bite to eat. Go to Jugtown Pottery to see photographs of pots that will be available at the kiln opening.

Celebration of Seagrove Potters

The Celebration of Seagrove Potters is this upcoming weekend! Beginning Friday evening on the 19th the Gala opens up this famous pottery weekend at 6:00pm. Music, food, conversations with pottery lovers, and the collaborative auction all make for this evening to be loads of fun. You can sign up to win two tickets to the Friday night gala at the Celebration of Seagrove Potters website. The 35$ tickets are good for the whole weekend.

On Saturday morning the Seagrove pottery show opens up at 9:00am and on Sunday morning at 10:000 am. Each day there is a 5$ gate admittance. There will be demos in the afternoon and plenty of pottery to look at! The Celebration of Seagrove Potters includes the potters that live in and around the town of Seagrove.

Chapel Hill Challenge-Why are folks throwing pots around 705?

In the Chapel Hill's Herald Sun there is a weekly challenge question that the readers can answer to win a special prize. This past weeks question?

"Why are folks who live near Highway 705 in the Piedmont Triad always throwing around pots?"

There was a winning answer! According to Falconer, "Highway 705 runs through the Seagrove area, known for pottery, and has been designated by the state as the official NC Pottery Highway."

Well, I for one will agree with that. What were we doing yesterday and what will we be doing today? .... drum roll please.... Yes you are correct! Throwing pots.
