Janet Jones and her husband, Dr. David Jones, director of the NC Zoo, visited Africa in 2008. Come hear about her adventures in Kenya and the Serengeti plains and see slides of the animal kingdom she visited!

Seagrove in the Blogosphere : Carolina Arts Unleashed

......"The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, will present the exhibit,Ceramics : Southeast, in the McMaster Gallery, on view from Oct. 12 through Nov. 19, 2009.

The exhibition brings together the creative talent of thirteen individual artists from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Each has taken their own unique path that celebrates contemporary ceramics from traditional pottery to non-traditional sculptural forms. Chosen to represent multiple approaches to clay and backgrounds the artist represent both full time studio potters to practicing academics......."

PBS Programs explore passions of artists, craftspeople, collectors

...."Craft in America," which premiered in 2007, returns at 8 tonight with two episodes, "Origins" and "Process." They're followed at 10 p.m. by the season opener of the critically acclaimed biennial program "Art:21 -- Art in the Twenty-First Century." At 10 p.m. Tuesday, collectors "Herb & Dorothy" launch 2009-10 "Independent Lens" programming.

The high points of the former are segments with the Owens family of venerable Jugtown Pottery in Seagrove, N.C., where local clay has been spun into functional ware for generations, and with Charleston, S.C., blacksmith Philip Simmons, whose signature iron gates are synonymous with the coastal city's charm.

It's a pleasure to meet Vernon Owens, who has thrived on the hard and rhythmic work of throwing pots for five decades. But his story is made vivid by the contentment in the eyes of his son Travis, a graduate of the College of Art and Design at North Carolina State University, as he contemplates his future in the Jugtown continuum."

Second Annual Viola Owens Brady "Pots for the Cure"

Once Again, the family of M.L. Owens will hold a special sale of potter in memory of M.L. and Marie's daughter, Viola Owens Brady who died of breast cancer in 1989. All proceeds from sale will be given to American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen for the cure organization.

This sale will feature specially marked pieces from Orignal Owens, Jugtown, Bolick, and Traditions Pottery as well as items from other family members. There will be live music.

FALL KILN OPENING: "A Work in Progress"

October 10 10:00 - 5:00 The studio is nearing completion with kilns firing again this coming week. Large pieces, functional wares, and new altered items will be available in the emerging showroom on the 10th. A select preview of the first kiln load will be online Friday, October 9th. Avery Pottery and Tileworks Kiln Opening : October 10 & 11

This year Blaine Avery will be featuring salt glazed turtles and hand built animals. There will also be a large selection of new hand painted pots from the salt kiln so expect the unexpected. Blaine hasn't made his very popular turtles in some time and is working on some new creatures, so plan to get first glimpse of the new creations before they are gone.

Ten Mudslingers: Pottery Is Focus of Campbell House Show

Pottery is the focus of October's gallery show at the Campbell House Galleries.

.."Sally Larson and Mo McKenzie, of Fireshadow Pottery; Bobbie and Scott Thomas, of Thomas Pottery; Linda and Jim Dalton, of Linda Dalton Pottery; Linda and Charles Riggs, of Riggs Pottery; and Georgia and Byron Knight, of Ole Fish House Pottery, will bring their wares to Southern Pines for a show that will highlight the many variations of works in clay."
